What a website actually costs in Australia
Agencies commonly quote custom, so cost guides stay vague. We publish our prices, so this one is specific: real numbers, what moves them, and what should never cost extra.
01 · The answer
How much does a website cost in Australia?
At Outlap, Essentials is $599 for one page. Marketing sites and online stores start at $1,490, and web apps start at $4,900.
These are our starting prices. Your brief determines the fixed quote.
02 · Cost drivers
What drives the cost of a website up?
Scope drives cost: the number of pages and sections, e-commerce, booking systems, content creation, custom features and integrations. Each adds design, build and testing time, and the honest way to price it is line by line in a fixed quote.
Every section is designed, written, built and tested. Ten sections cost more than four.
Products, payments, tax, freight and invoices. The build gains a second system to get right. Our online store tier starts at $1,490 with no platform subscription — see what that saves against a hosted platform.
Calendars, availability, reminders. Useful, and priced as the feature it is.
Copy and photography you don't have yet must be made. Arrive with both and this line item disappears.
Calculators, portals, dashboards. Anything with logic behind it is application work.
CRM, email, analytics, payments. Each connection is built and verified.
03 · The baseline
What shouldn't cost extra, but often does?
Mobile layout, deployment and basic performance are not add-ons. They are the baseline of a competently built website, and we price all three at zero.
Mobile
Most of your traffic is on a phone. A site that works there is the job, not an upgrade.
Deployment
You receive a running website at your domain. A zip file and a go-live invoice is not a handover.
Basic performance
Speed comes from a disciplined build, not a paid optimisation phase. Every build is checked before handover: open the health-tracking app or the maintenance-planning simulator and see how fast they load.
04 · Market context
What do Australian agencies typically charge?
Australian agencies commonly quote several thousand to tens of thousands of dollars for a multi-page marketing site. Hourly rates commonly run $100 to $200, so a quoted price is largely a labour estimate in disguise.
Neither figure is a scandal. Custom quoting carries real overhead: account management, discovery phases, meetings, revisions billed by the hour. Typical timelines run weeks to months, and time is what gets billed. A small senior team with a fixed process carries less of that overhead, which is why our ladder starts where it does.
05 · Keeping it down
How do you keep the cost of a website down?
Bring finished copy and photos, appoint one decision-maker, and fix the scope before the build starts. Those three decisions remove most of the billable churn on a web project.
Finished content first: copywriting and photography are real line items, and arriving with both deletes them from the quote. One decision-maker second: committees redesign, a single owner decides, and revision loops are where hourly projects grow. Fixed scope last: a clear brief is what lets a studio quote a fixed price instead of metering hours, and scope agreed up front is scope you can hold a builder to.

07 · The quote
How does the fixed quote work?
Complete the project brief and a fixed quote comes back within 2 business days. The quote is fixed against the brief: the price does not move unless the scope does.
The brief takes two to four minutes, mostly taps. There is no hourly meter and no discovery invoice before you see a number. If the scope changes mid-build, the quote is revised in writing before any extra work starts.
